The Clements
A Novel
Twenty-year-old Jodie, penniless and alone, wants nothing more than to have a stable home and a reliable family, but her older sister is constantly in trouble with the law and has gone so far as to steal thousands of dollars from a notorious local family, the Clements, who grow marijuana on the fields of their generational family farm. Rather than risk the Clements hunting her sister down, Jodie agrees to work for them to pay off her sister’s debt.
As Jodie grows more involved in the Clements’ world, she unexpectedly finds herself becoming one of the family and falls in love with Micah, the youngest son, who teaches her not only how to care for and manage the farm, but also how to survive in the Florida wilderness. She learns self-reliance and discovers her inner strength and determination to make a good life for herself.
When her sister’s body is discovered, however, Jodie grows suspicious of the Clements themselves and how they may have been involved in her murder. In trying to uncover what happened to her sister, Jodie is forced to confront truths about the head of the family, Marsh, and the complicated relationships among the Clements siblings. The more she discovers, the closer she comes to losing Micah and this new life that she’s come to know and love.
About the author
Alex Scamahorn
I live in a small rural town in North Florida and I work as a reading specialist at our local elementary school. My driving force is to teach kids to read so that they have opportunities to make a good life for themselves, and in some cases a better life than the one they were born into. The human spirit is resilient and inspiring, and I’m privileged to witness it every day. Writing has always been my deepest, most constant passion, and I’m thankful that no matter what I’ll always have the written word. When not writing, I enjoy baking, knitting, and watching Murder, She Wrote. My greatest loves by far are my husband and my two sons, and the life we share together.
